I guess when people get older, we think back to memories more often. Or one reason can be that kids are bigger and we have much more time.

Or my heart is at peace right now that I can think back of it.

I often thought about when my kids were in school (one is still in high school), about how was my school life in Japan… what is different from Finland.

I was a student in Japan, in the 80 to 90s, so I am pretty sure that it has changed a lot now.

But here is my experience.

I went to kindergarten at age 5. Kindergarten was from 9 to 13 o’clock. I guess most mothers were not working outside the house. They were housewives all day.

Finally, send kids to kindergarten at 9 am, then kids come home already after 3-4h. Then the father of the child comes home at 21:00. It must be so tuff work for mothers… 😆 Of course for fathers too.

We have a uniform in kindergarten, so it is easy to choose the clothes!

Primary school is from 7-12 years old, Junior high school is from 13-15 years old, then high school is from 16-18, University is from 19 and so.

A big event during primary school time is Shichigosan. When the girls are at age of 7 and boys at age of 5, we celebrate of growth. We dressed up in Kimono for this special day. I still have this Kimono in my closet.

I am really amazed at how good the school systems are in Finland.

For example, we learn English at school too, but not many people can speak English after many years of learning. I think the way they teach isn’t practical compared to here in Finland.

But I can really proud of the system in Japan, we have a “club” after school every day and in so many different categories. Sport, music, art… You can choose what you want to learn more about.

I would say 98% of kids are entering clubs. We compete in an area competition, then in the national competition. Some of them continue as professional an athlete.

I was a basketball player. Basketball was everything to me back then.

Actually, I did also track and field competitions like the high jump, long jump, and 100m running. I was many hours training after school every day.

Going to private school was popular at that time. I wanted to go to a public high school with my local friends, but my father was overprotective and he convinced me to go to a girls-only private high school.

But after I enter the school, I got to know that we have more parties together with boys-only high school students! Hahaha.

I wanted to go to working life so quickly to make my own money. So I decided to go to the training school to be a cabin crew after high school.

I finish school but I have never been a cabin crew. I got more interested to work in the entertainment business as a model and actress.

I will write someday about model work in Japan.

人は年を重ねると、思い出話をすことが多くなると思います。私もその一人。子供が大きくなって時間に余裕があることが理由の 1 つかもしれません。

もしくは、心が平和だから振り返る余裕ができたのかな。

子供たちがこの土地フィンランドで学校に通っていた頃（一人はまだ高校生）、日本の学校生活はどうだったのか、フィンランドと何が違うのか、度々考えました。

私は 80 年代から 90 年代にかけて日本で学生をしていたので、その当時と今の日本の学校はかなり変わってるんでしょうね。

私は5歳から幼稚園に通いました。幼稚園は9時から13時までで、ほとんどの母親は専業主婦だったと思います。

午前 9 時に子供たちを幼稚園に送り、3 ～ 4 時間後にはすでに帰宅します。子供の父親は 21:00 くらいまで仕事から帰ってこない。。。お母さんたちは子供につきっきりで、本当に大変ですよね。😆　もちろんお父さんもですが。

この先は日本語に訳さなくても、みなさんご存知ですが、小学校は 7 ～ 12 歳、中学校は 13 ～ 15 歳、高校は 16 ～ 18 歳、大学は 18 歳くらいから。

幼児期の大イベントといえば七五三。女の子は7歳で、男の子は5歳で成長を祝う日。この着物は今でもクローゼットの中に思い出としてあります。

フィンランドの学校制度の良さには本当に驚かされます。

日本の義務教育でも英語を学びますが、何年も英語を学んだ後に英語を話せる人は多くありませんよね。ここフィンランドに比べると、日本での英語の教え方は実用的ではないのかもしれません。ほとんどのフィンランド人が英語を当たり前のように話します。

幼稚園児では近場の森へクロスカウントリーをしに先生が十数人の子供達を連れて行くなど、日本で育った私としては驚くような事もたくさんありました。

でも、日本での学生時代といえば部活。部活のシステムを本当に誇りに思っています。毎日放課後、スポーツ、音楽、アート…　様々なジャンルで学べる事は素晴らしいと思います。それに関わる先生方にも感謝です。

私の地域では生徒の 98% 近くが何らかの部活に入っていました。地区大会に出場し、強いチームであれば全国大会に出場します。

私はバスケットボール選手でした。バスケットボールは私にとって全てでした。そんな熱い時もあったんですね。

さらに、走り高跳び、幅跳び、100m走などの陸上競技もダブルで部活動をしていました。毎日放課後に何時間もトレーニングをして、1日に5回くらい食事をしていたのを覚えています。

当時は私立に通うのが流行っていて、私は地元の友人と公立高校に行きたいと思っていましたが、父は早くボーイフレンドを作るのが心配だったのか、私立女子校に行くよう説得してきました。

女子校に入学してから知ったのですが、女子校は男子校からたくさんパーティーのお誘いがあるんだと言うことを。。。お父さん、勘違い。ハハハ。

私は早く社会人になりたいと思っていたので、高校卒業後は客室乗務員になるための専門学校に通うことにしました。学校は卒業しましたが、客室乗務員になったことはありません。学生時代にスカウトされたモデルや芸能界で働くことにもっと興味を持つようになってしまったんです。

またいつかモデル時代のお話をしますね。
