Happy Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s day in Japan is serious business. For girls and also for chocolate makers.

This is the day the girls propose to the boys whom they are in love with.

Also if you are working at the offices, you might buy hundreds of small obligatory chocolate for all men at the office to make everyone feels happy.

The highest chocolate sale in Japan is in February before valentine’s day. So this is the chance for chocolate makers to increase annual sales for the year.

Chocolate sales in the whole of Japan are 108 billion yen which is around 758 million euros during the season.

That is a lot…

I remember when I was 14 years old, I liked one boy from junior high school, he was one year older. He was very sporty and kind. If I remember right, he was a footballer.

It was common to present handmade knitted scarf and heart-shaped chocolate on this special day.
Luckily I was quite good at handcraft, so it was easy for me to make one.

Some of my friends almost cried that they couldn’t manage on time. We start to prepare already a month before to choose the knit color, style and so. It was a fun process.

When my father saw that I am knitting a scarf for the boy, but not for him. He was in bad mood for many days till valentine’s day are over… As I told you before, he was very protective.

I gave him a scarf and he received it. Which means, my “love” is accepted. (you return chocolate or a gift if you don’t have feeling for that girl)

Quite cruel…

We were officially boyfriend and girlfriend but we were so young, we didn’t date or anything. We were changing the diary every day. hahaha

But I have been one of the sad girls too. I still remember that traumatic moment.
I was 17 and fell in love with a different boy. 😅

He was 5 years older. It was a big day to tell him that I love him.

I made a handcraft pillow case this time. I was so nervous all day.

I took the train to his nearest train station, I was there for sure standing for 1 hour and thinking about what to do… Then I got a carriage and started to walk to his home.

Then I heard a car coming down with loud music. It was him driving Volvo and a beautiful girl was sitting next to him… I was so sad and cried on my way home without giving the chocolate.

I guess I put a pillow in the garbage and ate chocolate. That was my first heartbreak moment.

In Finland, valentine’s day is friend’s day. When I first came in 1993, there wasn’t any special event for this day.

Nowadays in Finland, we celebrate more for this event. We change messages between friends. And maybe send flowers or chocolate.

日本のバレンタインデーは避けて通れない大切な日。女の子が男の子にプロポーズする日。

男女にとってドキドキで、チョコレートメーカーにとっては商戦。昔ながらのチョコレートから新しいタイプのものまで満載で街はバレンタイン一色になりますよね。

チョコレートの売り上げが一番多いのは2月上旬。まだ2月でありながら、チョコレート メーカーにとっては年間売り上げを伸ばすチャンス。

日本全体でのバレンタインデーシーズン中のチョコレート売上高は 1080 億円で、ユーロでは約 758億 ユーロです。

計算あってるかな？　いずれにしてもすごい金額ですよね。

私が14歳のとき、ある男の子が好きでした。彼は1歳年上の先輩で、とてもスポーティーで優しい男の子でした。記憶が正しければ、サッカー選手だったような気がします。

私の時代は編んだ毛糸のマフラーとハート型のチョコレートをプレゼントするのが一般的でした。
幸い私は手芸が得意だったので、簡単に作ることができました。

私の友人の何人かは、手芸が苦手で時間通りにできないと泣きそうになっているのを手伝った覚えがあります。

毛糸の色やスタイルなどを選ぶために、1か月くらい前から準備を始めて、ワクワクする楽しい作業でした。

私が男の子のためにマフラーを編んでいるのを見た私の父親は、バレンタインデーが終わるまで何日も不機嫌だったような覚えが。。。（笑）

当日、彼にマフラーとチョコレートをあげ、彼はそれを受け取ってくれました。つまり、私の「愛」は受け入れらた証拠。ヤッタァー！

私たちは正式にボーイフレンドとガールフレンドとなりましたが、まだ子供だったので、デートをすると言うよりは、交換日記をするくらいだったと思います。ははは。

もちろん、バレンタインデーにフラれた事もあります。あの衝撃的な瞬間を今でも忘れません。

私は17歳で、別の男の子に恋をしました。 😅

その当時、手作りのピローケースが流行っていて、無事に作品は予定通り仕上がり、一日中とても緊張していました。

放課後、電車で彼の最寄り駅まで行きました。そこに 1 時間近く立って、どうしようかと悩んでいたと思います。勇気が湧いて彼の家へ目掛けて歩いて行くと、大音量の音楽と共に車が降りてくるのを見ました。彼のボルボで、隣にはツヤツヤの髪の美人が座っていた…。

涙を流しながら帰宅。チョコレートは自分で食べてピローケースは捨てたのかな。それが私の最初の失恋の瞬間でした。切ない思い出。でも今でも彼とはお友達。

フィンランドでは、バレンタインデーは友達の日です。私が初めてフィンランドに来た1993年はまだバレンタインデーは多く知られていませんでした。

ですが、最近では友達同士でメッセージを交換したり、花やチョコレートを送ったりして、お祝いするようになりました。

私は今日はクッキーを焼いてバレンタインデーのお祝い。あなたの今日の予定は？
